There are many elaborate Halloween costume ideas you can choose from, but this year, walk the plank and get crafty for a fun idea: a DIY pirate Halloween costume! A pirate is a super versatile idea: it works for an adult, kid, male, or female. Even dogs can get in on the action!
Whether you're going for Captain Jack Sparrow vibes or a more fashionable take on the look, this classic Halloween costume will never steer you wrong, and you probably already have materials on hand to make it happen. From costumes that you can rock when it's not Halloween, to themed getups perfect for groups and best friend Halloween costumes, there's something here for everyone. Comfy DIY Pirate Costume
Brit + Co
Let's be honest—sometimes Halloween costumes aren't always the most comfortable. Between itchy, synthetic fabrics and heavy makeup, you may find yourself counting down the hours until you can get home to throw on your pajamas. If you agree, then this costume—which comes together with a pair of leggings and a T-shirt—is the pirate costume for you.
You don't need to be able to sew to make your own pirate costume. The pants here were made by cutting up an old pair of sweatpants, and the jacket is simply a piece of jersey fabric with holes cut for arms.
If you want to keep it super simple this Halloween, reach into your closet for a basic striped T-shirt and some dark jeans, then pirate things up with a sash belt, bandana, and eye patch.
If you've got your heart set on dressing as a pirate, but also want to coordinate with your family or friends, consider a Peter Pan group theme! The Captain Hook coat seen here is made from this pattern and requires some sewing skills, but we bet you could get a similar look by adorning a store-bought coat.
The jacket for this Captain Hook costume was made from a red T-shirt—how clever is that? Make one for yourself or your little one and pair it with a white button down shirt, black pants, and, of course, an eye patch.
With a simple white shirt and black pants as the base, this costume is all about the finishing touches. Buy an accessory kit online or make your own. (Both the red bandana and sash belt were made by cutting up an old T-shirt.)
You're bound to run into another pirate or two this Halloween. Ensure you stand out from the crowd by crafting your own hat! This one is made from felt and elastic. Faux red rhinestones as eyes add a festive touch (though you could just as easily draw them on with a marker).
Unlike the previous Peter Pan group costume, this Captain Hook costume by Destiny of the blog Suburban Wife City Life does not involve a pattern and requires only basic sewing skills. (The jacket is made from an adult size small sweatshirt.)
For a fashion-forward pirate look, style a flowy striped dress with tall boots and pirate accessories. The best part? You can wear the dress long after Halloween.
This pirate accessory kit has everything you need (hat, eye patch, treasure map, compass, and more!) to dress up an otherwise simple Halloween costume.
